Sudan arrests opposition leaders after Ethiopia mediation effort

Sudanese security forces have arrested two opposition leaders shortly after they met with Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during reconciliation talks in Sudan's capital, Khartoum. Among the protest movement delegates he met were opposition politician Mohamed Esmat and a leader of the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), Ismail Jalab. The arrest of Jalab comes just days after the SPLM-N's deputy leader, Yasir Arman, was seized from his home in Khartoum. Ethiopian mediationFollowing Abiy's visit to Sudan on Friday, his spokeswomen told reporters that the prime minister had endorsed two envoys to continue mediation efforts between the military and protesters. Upon Abiy's arrival in Khartoum, the alliance of Sudanese opposition groups and protesters said it accepted Ethiopia as a mediator in their political deadlock with the Transitional Military Council (TMC), under certain conditions.
