Sudan Summons Ethiopian Envoy over Border Tensions

The Sudanese Foreign Ministry summoned on Saturday the Ethiopian chargé d’affaires in protest at the attack of Ethiopian militias backed by the Ethiopian army that killed and wounded several Sudanese army personnel and civilians. In a statement, the Sudanese ministry voiced the government’s condemnation and rejection of this “heinous aggression,” which comes ahead holding the second meeting of the high-level joint committee on the border issues, according to the Sudanese news agency. In the same context, Governor of Gedarif state Nasr-Eddin Abdul-Gayoum said the Ethiopian side has greedy ambitions in the Sudanese territories, although Ethiopia inked an agreement with Sudan on borders in 1903. He described what is happening on the ground as a systematic work, adding the Sudanese armed forces are ready for protecting the Sudanese citizens and lands. The clashes erupted when Ethiopian militias, supported by the Ethiopian army, infiltrated into the Sudanese territories and attacked farmland on the Sudan-Ethiopia border, killing and injuring a number of officers and personnel of the armed forces and Sudanese citizens, including children.
