Suck it and see: vacuum waste is coming to UK

One of the largest pneumatic waste-collection systems in the world will do away with wheelie bins and dustcarts at more than 11,000 homes and offices. Waste will be dropped into chutes and carried to a processing centre in underground vacuum tubes at speeds of up to 44mph. The system is being installed at the 420-acre Barking Riverside scheme in east London and is intended to pioneer Scandinavian energy-saving technology in the UK. It will replace 19,000 bins with 460 “waste outlets”. Envac, the Swedish company behind the technology, claims to reduce waste collection vehicle movements and the associated carbon emissions by up to 90 per cent.
