Chennai: In about three weeks, all major suburban stations in Chennai will have water-vending machines which will be installed by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).A machine will be installed at Mambalam station on Monday morning, an IRCTC official said. Other stations where the machines will come up include Saidapet, Avadi and St Thomas Mount. This will come as a relief to lakhs of suburban commuters as most of the water taps at the suburban stations are non-functional or in an unhygienic condition.Officials say already more than 20 such water-vending machines have been installed at Chennai Central, Egmore and Tirumailai station on MRTS section. The official said this is the first zone in the country to get so many machines in stations. Railway ministry has planned to ensure that commuters can get purified water at cheap rates.
