Subtropical storm Alberto could bring $1 billion in losses to U.S. gulf coast

(Bloomberg) — Subtropical Storm Alberto won’t get much stronger before it comes ashore on Florida’s Panhandle early Monday, as it spreads heavy rains across the U.S. South potentially causing more than $1 billion in economic losses. “As a result, little change in intensity is forecast before Alberto reaches the northern Gulf Coast on Monday,” Brown wrote in a forecast analysis. Alberto formed several days ahead of the official start of the six-month Atlantic hurricane season on June 1. In the end, it might not be wind and disruption to energy production that the storm is best known for. Onshore areas along the coast also account for about 45 percent of U.S. refining capacity and 51 percent of gas processing.
