A one-off top-up grant for supporting online learning of financially needy students will be made available to schools in Hong Kong in view of some students being unable to acquire appropriate Internet services due to their living environments. Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung Yun-hung wrote on his Facebook today that under the epidemic, different modes of learning including e-learning at home may become the new normal in teaching and learning. “For students with financial needs, computer equipment and internet access are areas they needed support,” he wrote. Yeung also pointed out that the government has subsidized needy primary and secondary students for purchasing mobile computer devices since the 2018/19 school year through the Community Care Fund. On the other hand, the Student Finance Office and the Social Welfare Department had been disbursing Internet access subsidies to support students to access basic internet services.
