Nicola Sturgeon was described by the New Statesman last week as the UK’s most powerful woman. So what if, 34 years ago, a 16-year-old Ms Sturgeon had joined Labour instead of the SNP? As a West of Scotland Labour candidate for Westminster, she’d have been automatically elected, if not in 1992, then definitely in 1997, both occasions when she stood as an SNP candidate and Labour won. Under Ed Miliband, in opposition, she would have emerged as a leftie star. And then, growing in assurance, she’d defeat Jeremy Corbyn
