Steven Tari Tambean Garae from Vanuatu pleaded guilty last year to rape and unlawful sexual connection following the April 2023 attack in Blenheim, which the Crown described as “the stuff of nightmares”. Today, supporters and members of the 11-year-old girl’s family cried quietly as her grandmother and primary caregiver read a victim impact statement. She said the girl felt sad almost all the time, and that the feeling was growing worse - not better.
