Studio 54 wasn’t built in a day; it took almost six weeks. And the downfall of the famed Manhattan nightclub didn’t happen right away either. That was almost three years later, when co-founders Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell were sentenced to prison for tax evasion. The owners incorporated Studio 54 as Broadway Catering, and bought daily liquor licenses to get around the fact that, for months, they didn’t have a permanent one. “Studio 54 wasn’t a nightclub,” he says today.
