“In elementary and in high school, I’ve witnessed firsthand and second-hand sexual harassment and sexual violence,” 17-year-old Bronte Ibbotson, a high school student in Niagara, Ont. High School Too, a project started by the Consent Action Team at Ryerson University, has since evolved into a combination of efforts from both post-secondary and high school students across the nation. 19-year-old Sofita Alda of Toronto also talks about why safe spaces are necessary to confront sexual violence. Other call to actions for governments include mandating provincial standards on data collection of sexual violence against high school students, establishing a national consent awareness week and applying mandatory comprehensive sexual violence, harassment and consent education for all grade levels. At a federal level, High School Too is demanding funding to Statistics Canada to conduct a national survey on sexual violence in high schools.
