Last year, civilians suffered a fire-related injury every 36 minutes. That’s why the District Public Safety Department takes a hands-on approach to teaching kids about staying safe each year during National Fire Prevention Week. Firefighters are visiting hundreds of students at The Villages Charter School and The Villages Early Learning Company this week, spreading fire-safety awareness. “Remember that smoke does rise, so you have to stay low to the ground if there ever is a fire,” said Shirley Sirkis, a firefighter/paramedic with the department, as she spoke to a class of 3-year-olds Wednesday morning outside the front doors of The Villages Early Childhood Center.
