On the morning of Dec. 13 – the family’s first day in Cuba – Boychuk had gone out for a swim with another tourist when he was suddenly pulled underwater by an undertow. When Dan and Tuutalik arrived at the hospital, Boychuk had been sedated, his eyes taped shut. The doctors in Cuba believed he was ready, and to the insurance company, that’s all that mattered. “It’s impossible to say right now.”Dan, who has stayed with Boychuk in Cuba since December, said his son will soon be leaving Cira Garcia. Had Boychuk returned to Canada, where he is a citizen, in January, the sum of it would have likely been covered by insurance.
