Levels of vaccine hesitancy seen worldwide are threatening efforts to end the Covid-19 pandemic. For those around you debating whether or not to get the jab, some experts suggest addressing these concerns with compassion and respect, while others point to understanding the source of someone’s fear of getting the vaccination. In a more recent study, experts developed a different approach, based on more than 18 000 responses from a survey conducted in the UK. The key focus, they found, should be on the personal – rather than the collective – benefits of the vaccine. In other words, when discussing getting the jab with someone who's strongly hesitant, you should stress that vaccinations can protect them against serious illness, or even long Covid, on an individual level – rather than focus on how it will allow the reopening of economies and ensure a return to normality for society as a whole.
