Strike at CHT ends

The Parbatya Nagarik Parishad, Parbatya Bangalee Chhatra Parishad, Parbatya Chattagram Samaodhikar Andolon, Parbatya Gana Parishad and Parbatya Bangalee Chhatra Oikya Parishad started the strike at 6am on Wednesday, protesting the CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission (Amendment) Act, 2016. They claimed that the approval of the act would take away the rights to land which Bangalee settlers have in the CHT. People, especially service holders, school and college-going students were worst sufferers of the strike, said the ASP. Leaders of the four organisations urged the government to scrape the amendment’s move, as it was discriminatory for Bengalee people, who have been living in the CHT for long. Draft of the amendment was recently approved in a cabinet meeting at the Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
