Breaking the cycle, July 27Your article regarding gun violence was excellent, and it underscored many of the causes surrounding the proliferation of guns in the hands of young men living in areas where gangs have taken control of neighbourhoods. But I did not read about the root cause of why many children turn to gangs … as the attractive alternative to leading a crime-free life. The lack of a permanent and positive male role model to lead and influence a young male is deemed to be the chief effect that causes a drift toward gang membership. Until this issue is addressed by those within the communities, the problem of gun violence will not end. This story on gun violence stays largely in the tired narrative of law enforcement to keep guns out, in spite of a map that illustrates, for the umpteenth time, the link between gun violence, poverty, racism and government stinginess.
