The hard-earned accolade seemed proof that, even in these trying times for newspapers, a plucky family-run outfit can still be capable of big things. Only 15% of America’s daily newspaper circulation is under independent control, meaning a publisher that operates only a single newspaper, according to research from Dirks, Van Essen & Murray. DV&M notes, however, that there remain 82 daily newspapers that have been owned by the same family for more than 100 years.
