The latest example of the diplomatic pressure being brought to bear on Ethiopia is the release this week of a politicized report by the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia (ICHREE). These flaws thus tends to undercut a fundamental principle of international law, namely that the primary responsibility for the promotion and protection of human rights rests with states themselves. Western governments and such international institutions they control as the U.N. have a checkered history when it comes to the protection of human rights. Although they espouse human rights values in their rhetoric and policies, their excoriation of human rights violations are by and large is dependent on the extent to which other countries (or certain groups) are willing to obey their commands. Consequently, the horrendous human rights violations states and groups, such as the TPLF, that have cultivated friendly ties with the West or dutifully carry out the West’s bidding, commit are whitewashed or completely ignored.
