The stone post was pushed or fell from its usual position sometime over the weekend. Nelson's historic Church Steps are being fixed after an apparent act of weekend vandalism. Nelson City Council (NCC) contractors were to spend Monday morning putting the cathedral steps to rights after a stone post was pushed from its place over the weekend. The solid stone post, toppled from its position on the first flight up from Trafalgar St, was first noticed by passers-by on Sunday afternoon, but it is not known when exactly the damage was done. Council spokesman Paul Shattock said there were CCTV cameras in the area, but it would be up to the police to follow up.
