The incident happened about 11.30pm after police were called to respond to a speeding car in Whangamata township. Eastern Waikato Police response commander, Senior Sergeant Rex Knight, said at some stage before they were stopped the man and his female partner switched seats. A passenger in a car pulled over for speeding nipped out and stole the cop's car in Whangamata on Saturday night, leaving his partner to face the music. Police found the patrol car three hours later around 3am on Sunday dumped in Opoutere, some 15km away, but no sign of the driver.
