Stocks on Wall Street closed nearly flat Tuesday after an early rally lost momentum toward the end of the day. The S&P 500 rose 4.83 points, or 0.2%, to 3,091.84. Rockwell Automation jumped 10.5% — one of the biggest gains in the S&P 500 — after the company reported earnings that were better than analysts expected. Across the S&P 500, companies are on track to report a 2.4% drop in third-quarter earnings per share compared with a year earlier. About 90% of the companies in the S&P 500 have reported their results so far.
