As Covid-19 infections and deaths increase, Kenyans are also staring at starvation as all the maize in the strategic grain reserves has been contaminated by the deadly aflatoxin. After all, the strategic grain reserve is supposed to be the last resort in case of a shortage. It is unbelievable that the country could have been caught flat-footed on the management of such a key national asset. As a solution to the looming maize shortage, millers have been allowed to import 4 million bags of the grain as the rotten stuff in the national silos is disposed of.
