I’m always surprised to see Michael Ironside pop up in a movie. In Stegman Is Dead, he’s Don, a crime boss who needs to get his hands on some VHS tapes (they would be VHS, wouldn’t they?) He sends Gus (Michael Eklund) to collect the incriminating records – Gus also provides voice-over narration – but things get complicated as more interested parties show up, including an actress (Bernice Liu) whose skills include more than just dramaturgy. Stegman Is Dead also serves as a title within the film, written in chalk on a clapperboard that every character can’t help but erase and rewrite. It’s a clever joke, and not the only one, but by the time the film wraps it’s clear there’s not much more to enjoy than these few scattered chuckles.
