State should salvage what is left of the ailing coffee sector


COFFEE QUALITYCartels emerged in the 1970s, when Nairobi and Mombasa business tycoons smuggled Ugandan cherries into the country. ALTERNATIVE CROPSThe ripple effect affected food crop production. There were no economies of scale to established coffee farmers as unions operated below capacity. UNIONSA once-lucrative economic activity, farmers’ derived satisfaction and esteem from coffee farming. Until such pride is ploughed back to the modern farmer, whose allegiance has shifted to other types of farming, the coffee sector will remain in shambles.
