Leaders and activists of the non-political social organization made the statement during a human-chain program organized in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka last morning. Coastal Day was observed in 16 districts including the capital for the third consecutive year. The day is being observed since 2017, to remember the victims who were killed in a devastating tidal surge on this day in 1970. According to the unofficial record over 1 million people of coastal areas were killed in the disaster, whereas, the official record puts the death toll at 500,000.
