THE day-long standoff at the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) on Thursday ended “peacefully” after a leadership dispute was settled, an official said. “There was a peaceful turnover and the new appointees have taken over as well,” he said. Carolina also said that the election was done without the approval of the DND, which supervises the PVAO and VFP. The standoff began at 7 a.m. on Thursday as Carolina and other defense officials went to the VFP office in Manila to protest the continued stay of de Gracia despite Lorenzana’s directive that was issued on May 28. De Gracia’s lawyer said that Lorenzana had no right to nullify the results of the election and that designating a replacement was illegal.
