They are wealthy because they grew from cities and towns in England – a country that is football mad and can sustain 90-plus league clubs. Surely our Premier League clubs have enough ground staff to ensure that, working with the council, those pitches could be kept in good nick. But instead, all I have seen is “take, take, take, money, ­money, money, come into the megastore and buy this or that”. The change at the top of the Premier League has brought us to a junction and, if the new CEO quickly focuses on these issues, he or she will go from zero to hero in double-quick time.
