Stalled coronavirus relief negotiations hit new obstacle: State aid

White House officials and Democratic leaders remained at an impasse Monday over another coronavirus relief package, with aid for cash-strapped state and local governments emerging as the latest obstacle in negotiations. "We’re not going to give a trillion dollars for state and local," he said during an interview with CNBC on Monday. But Democrats warned that without more federal funding, state and local governments -- which combined employ about 23.2 million essential workers -- will be forced to lay off employees and cut essential services. State and local governments, reeling from the loss of tax revenue as a result of the virus-induced recession, are lobbying Congress to allocate billions more in relief. The $2.2 trillion CARES Act approved in late March allocated $150 billion for state and local governments.
