St. Catharines vet charged with animal cruelty


A St. Catharines veterinarian has been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty following an investigation by the Ontario SPCA and the Lincoln County Humane Society. The criminal investigation against Dr. Mahavir Rekhi was launched on Sept. 14, 2016 after the humane society received reports of animal cruelty. Rekhi is facing 16 counts of animal cruelty including eight indictable counts of causing unnecessary pain or suffering to an animal and eight indictable counts of failing to provide suitable and adequate care for an animal. The alleged abuse happened in 2013. “A great deal of information was brought forth during this investigation,” Regional Inspector Carol VanderHeide of the Ontario SPCA said in a news release.
