Squatters turn Taranaki pensioner's $46,000 house bargain into expensive headache

Ralph Cooley has two possession orders from the Tenancy Tribunal for the house he owns in the Taranaki town of Manaia, which the former owner refuses to leave. The retired house painter moved to the rural Taranaki town of Stratford from Auckland in 2017, swapping a “big mortgage” for a little one. He intended to move into the house in the South Taranaki town of Manaia and do it up. SIMON O'CONNOR/Stuff Warning signs have been put up on the wall and fence of the house in Manaia. He asked the South Taranaki District Council to shut off the water supply to the house, but this was declined.
