Spotlight on Least Developed Countries

The fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries is taking place in Doha, Qatar this week until 9 March. Held every ten years, the conference brings together world leaders, civil society, the private sector and young people to address the specific challenges face by Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Leon Kacou Adom of Côte d’Ivoire pointed out that least developed countries represent 1.1 billion people or 14% of the world’s population and represent 16% of the planet surface. Support, including technology transfer, for the implementation of internationally agreed developed goals is by no means adequate, said Assefa. Approaching the concept from the other side, Dan Jørgensen, Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy of Demark observed that many least developed countries feel the international community has not responded adequately to the challenge they face.
