Sports broadcast: Fight against exclusivity clause gets boost


’Tana AiyejinaThe clamour by Nigerians to have the exclusivity clause in live football and sports broadcast erased from pay television may have received a big boost following recent developments, our correspondent has learnt. Findings showed that the clause is non-existent in countries like England, Spain and Italy, where the broadcast rights to air live matches in the Premier League, LaLiga and Serie A were acquired from. Unlike in Nigeria, where only one pay television broadcasts the English Premier League, which has a huge following, England does not allow any pay television the right to exclusivity in the broadcast of EPL matches. This measure, it was learnt, was designed to prevent a monopolistic situation in the Spanish audiovisual space, and was valid for five years.
