Another 34 agri-food workers around the Lake Erie town of Leamington have tested positive for COVID-19 amid growing concerns a local outbreak could quickly get out of hand. The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported the number Tuesday among 43 new cases, its biggest one-day surge since the virus reached its peak in mid-April. Health units across the province reported 291 new confirmed and probable cases raising the provincial total to 32,618, according to a Star compilation of data from health units as of 11 a.m. The Leamington area, with its expansive greenhouse operations and farms, is Canada’s capital for migrant workers, with at least 8,000, making it a potential hotbed for COVID-19. The Ministry of Health said another 337 Ontarians have recovered from COVID-19, for a total of 24,829.
