If the Labour Government wants to be re-elected, its cooler heads should see to it that the idea of lowering the speed limits is quashed. The other is a bit more abstract: the leader of the Opposition tweeting against wholesale speed limit reductions and getting roasted online in response by Labour and Green stalwarts arguing for lower speed limits. If we go into the next election with the prospect of speed limits being reduced significantly, it is hard to see the Government winning. In a non-aggressive way, ask those people what they think about widespread reductions in the speed limits on the scale suggested. And when new speed limits mean you get to your holiday destination later – and leave earlier – it feels like a back seat driver.
