Traffic DSP Dilip Xalxo, who is co-ordinating the field tests, said three speed guns had arrived from Delhi and Mumbai for the feasibility drill. These speed guns can cover a distance of up to 150 metres at night, capturing clear images of a vehicle along with its registration number, besides accurately measuring the speed. The IG maintained that using the speed guns on national and state highways would be their priority since maximum number of fatal accidents take place on these thoroughfares. Once procurement is done, the speed guns are expected to undergo further technical fabrication before being connected to the main police server. Incidentally, police have also started the procurement process of six hi-tech vehicles, mounted with speed guns and other traffic control tools, at the cost of Rs 28 lakh each.
