The stated purpose of the White House Correspondents Dinner, other than celebrating the First Amendment when not admiring itself in front of the camera, is to raise money for aspiring journalists (each year, the White House Correspondents Association hands out about $100,000 in scholarship money). First, are reporters really all that upset that Trump won’t be attending their dinner? The morning after the White House Correspondents Dinner, the president’s base will still despise the media.
