Speaker signs OMP Act

NewsSpeaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday signed the Office on Missing Persons (OMP) Act which was unanimously approved by Parliament on August 11 with amendments. The office of missing persons will trace those disappeared during the war against the LTTE and JVP led arm revolt in the past too. Over 20,000 persons reportedly to be missing during the three decades of war period starting from 1980. Meanwhile welcoming the move to set up OMP office, the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has made its own suggestions. HRC states that the legal framework of the OMP would have had greater legitimacy if it was enacted after the on-going public consultations process so that the insights and concerns of the affected families could have been incorporated.
