Spain buys seismometers for Gibraltar Strait tunnel studies – The North Africa Post

Spain has acquired four seismometers under a lease-to-own contract, for a total cost of nearly 500,000 euros. These devices will be used to study the seismic activity in the Strait of Gibraltar area, where the future railway tunnel connecting Morocco to Spain is planned to pass, Spanish portal Vozpopuli reported. The connection points are expected to be at Punta Paloma in Tarifa and Malabata in the Bay of Tangier. According to SECEGSA, this infrastructure, with a length of 42 kilometers, including 27.8 kilometers underwater, would allow, in the medium term, the transit of more than 13 million tons of goods and 12.8 million passengers per year. The project is estimated to cost at least $6 billion as it gained a renewed interest after Morocco, Spain and Portugal joined forces to organize the World Cup in 2030.
