Space mission snaps Southern Alps and lakes

A photograph showing the ‘’spine of New Zealand’s South Island’’, has been released by the National Aeronautical Space Administration (Nasa). As well as pointing out New Zealand’s highest peak Aoraki/Mt Cook, the image shows Lake Takapō/Tekapo, Pukaki and Ōhau. “It [the photograph] has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed,” the website says. “When astronauts travel to the Moon and Mars, they are likely to grow edible plants to supplement food brought from Earth,” Nasa said. The image was provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, Johnson Space Center.
