A protest group known as Conscious Campers Aotearoa have embarked on a journey to challenge proposed new freedom camping laws. Southlander Heather Simpson is the Conscious Campers Uprising national spokesperson and says the proposed changes don’t take Kiwi campers into account. Tourism Minister Stuart Nash, with Northland MP Willow-Jean Prime, explains the changes to freedom camping he would like to see. The organisation was established in 2017 out of concern that some councils were using their Freedom Camping Bylaws against homeless people living in cars. Submission for the proposed new regulations closed Sunday, but the Responsible Campers Association and Conscious Campers Uprising are directing supporters to a Change.org petition.
