One person has been killed in a crash near Athol, in Southland, one of two fatal crashes in the South Island yesterday. In an earlier crash, a person died in a crash near Lincoln, in Canterbury. Emergency services were called to the scene of the single-vehicle crash on State Highway 6 near Athol, about 5pm. One person died and four people were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Police said one person died and two others were injured.
