Southland beach closed after asbestos washed up on shoreKavinda Herath/Stuff The Department of Conservation has sealed off access to land it manages near Ocean Beach after a member of the public notified them that asbestos had washed up on the shore. Access to a Southland beach popular with recreational fishermen and divers has been closed off after material containing asbestos washed up on the shore. A meeting was held on Monday afternoon and staff from Environment Southland, Public Health South, WorkSafe NZ and DOC attended. WorkSafe NZ Southland manager Nick Perham said the groups were taking a joint approach to deal with the matter according to the Southland Asbestos Liaison Protocol. All media enquiries regarding how the situation was being handled were directed to Public Health South and the Southern District Health Board.
