South Korea's GS Caltex, local companies explore building Sabah biobutanol plants

PUTRAJAYA: Biomass Green Technology Sdn Bhd (BGT), together with Agensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM), are partnering with South Korea's GS Caltex to assess the feasibility of building biobutanol plants in Sabah. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today to mark the beginning of a formal assessment, which includes the due diligence process for setting up GS Caltex's 2G Commercial Scale Plant – the first of its kind in the world. The synergistic collaboration is based on GS Caltex's pre-existing technology and the supply of feedstock by BGT. The project is aligned with the target set in the Sabah Biomass Industry Development Plan (SBIDP), a plan initiated by AIM. "The biomass sector offers a unique set of opportunities depending on the location and proximity of available biomass, as well as local demand and dynamics," he said.
