(Kim Kyung-Hoon/Reuters)On Friday, South Korea’s Constitutional Court unanimously upheld the legislature’s impeachment of President Park Geun-hye. South Korean President Park Geun-hye will be removed from power for her role in a corruption and influence-peddling scandal. He has expressed support for the deployment of a U.S. missile defense system (THAAD) in South Korea, sanctions on North Korea, and a cautious approach to engaging the North. Meanwhile, South Korea’s relations with China are at a nadir, and North Korea’s actions have the region on edge. As South Koreans choose a new president, close and sustained coordination with South Korea and Japan is more important than ever.
