The South Island has 23 mayors including two brothers plus one of NZ's youngest mayors and its longest-serving. In Buller, Garry Howard was re-elected mayor unopposed and neighbouring Grey District Council mayor Tony Kokshoorn was also returned unopposed. However, other Canterbury districts have seen mayors re-elected comfortably.
