South Island highways reopen after 'hundreds' stranded by snowy conditions

Busy highways in the South Island have finally reopened after being closed due to heavy snow and ice. The South Island’s busiest cross-island highways – Arthur’s Pass, Porters Pass (both State Highway 73), and the Lewis Pass (SH7) – reopened on Monday afternoon after being closed overnight and through Monday morning. Alden Williams/Stuff Dyers Pass Rd closed at Victoria Park and five cars were stranded on the street due to slippery conditions early on Monday. In the North Island, snow had closed the Desert Road on SH2, and SH4 through National Park. Arthur’s Pass, Mt Hutt, Taranaki and Ōhau had also moved to considerable danger.
