South Canterbury will bounce back with new opportunities, leaders say

Now New Zealand is out of alert level 4, and with businesses starting to reopen we asked leaders, experts and business owners how well they think South Canterbury will fare through the Covid-19 crisis. MYTCHALL BRANSGROVE/FAIRFAX NZ Aoraki Development chief executive Nigel Davenport says there are many advantages to South Canterbury that will help it through the economic crisis. Now as a tourism business, at the height of our season we have lost two months but we would rather take that hit than risk the life of any of our amazing customers. BEJON HASWELL/ STUFF Mackenzie District mayor Graham Smith says unemployment will rise in the district but the crisis also offers the chance to change the tourism model. This is an ideal opportunity to refocus our tourism market for best value for money, sustainable tourism activity and not necessarily at the expense of our environment and infrastructure.
