A photographer who moved his life to South Canterbury after being wowed by its natural beauty is a finalist in a prestigious New Zealand photography competitions. Twizel man Hunter Smith’s drone shot of wilding pines is a finalist in the aerial category of the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year competition from a field of 6000 amateur and professional entries, the magazine’s website says. The image was captured while Smith was looking for autumnal scenes along the Ōhau River in May. Smith said while it would be amazing to go home with an award, being named as a finalist has been fantastic.
