Photo: ReutersJohannesburg/Nairobi: About 1,000 workers are trapped underground at Sibanye Gold Ltd’s Beatrix mine in South Africa’s Free State province after a power failure at the mine, according to a local labour union. The incident began at about 8pm on Wednesday, National Union of Mineworkers spokesman Livhuwani Mammburu said by phone. About 40 workers have been rescued and brought to the surface, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union said on its Twitter account. A company spokesman couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
