As COVID-19 cases surge across much of the world, South Africa says its Omicron-driven fourth wave appears to have peaked. South Africa has lifted a midnight curfew with immediate effect, saying the peak of its fourth COVID-19 wave driven by the highly contagious Omicron variant has subsided. The requirements had been imposed earlier in December amid a surge in the Omicron cases. It was the third successive daily record of cases, with infections more than tripling since the beginning of the week. Meanwhile, Newfoundland recorded 349 new COVID-19 cases, with officials saying schools would shift to remote learning after the holiday break.
