A minibus taxi strike is reportedly affecting commuters and disrupting travel in parts of Ekurhuleni (East Rand) in Gauteng Province, early March 7. The strike is reportedly related to a disagreement between the minibus taxi owners and the municipality over taxi and bus routes. The taxi owners' union, the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), has announced that affected areas included Benoni, Germiston, Katlehong, Tembisa and Vosloorus. Protests, consisting of demonstrations, go-slow convoys, and roadblocks, are possible along major road routes, near taxi ranks, in city centers, and near airports and government buildings. Additional acts of vandalism or arson are possible, especially near taxi ranks, along major highways, and in lower-income areas.
